About Calcutta Watch Company

Calcutta Watch Company (CWC) is a heritage-inspired Indian watch brand born from the timeless soul of Kolkata.

We believe a watch is more than an instrument that tells time. It can carry a story, preserve a memory and become a personal connection to a place, its people and its history. At CWC, we create timepieces that bring those stories to life on the wrist.

Inspired by the streets, architecture, traditions, people and cultural character of old Calcutta, CWC transforms the city’s heritage into thoughtfully designed contemporary watches. Each collection draws from a distinctive chapter of Kolkata — from its legendary yellow taxis and grand colonial architecture to its equestrian traditions, vibrant festivals, historic streets and unmistakable vintage spirit.

Our purpose is not simply to recreate the past, but to reinterpret it for a new generation. We combine nostalgic details and heritage-inspired elements with contemporary aesthetics, creating watches that feel refined, wearable and timeless while remaining deeply connected to their origins.

Founded with a vision to bring Kolkata’s heritage to the world of watchmaking, CWC represents a journey where design meets storytelling, and where every dial has the potential to tell a story.

Because heritage should not only live in photographs, buildings and history books.
It can live on your wrist.

From Calcutta, for the world.

The Story

Every brand begins somewhere. For some, it begins with a product; for others, with a business opportunity, a personal passion or a moment of inspiration. For Kripanti Maity, the journey towards creating CWC — Calcutta Watch Company began with a thought that gradually grew into a much larger vision: what if the stories, heritage and cultural identity of Kolkata and West Bengal could be interpreted through the art of watch design?

Before the idea of CWC took shape, Kripanti Maity was involved in the world of digital content, business analysis, political analysis, branding and creative communication through his work as SGTeach. His interest in understanding how businesses grow, how brands build identities and how ideas connect with people gradually developed into a deeper fascination with creating a brand of his own. The transition from analysing businesses and brands to imagining one was not immediate. It emerged through a process of observation, curiosity, research and a growing belief that there was room in India for a distinctive micro watch brand with a strong cultural identity.

During August 2026, that thought began to take a clearer form. The idea was to create a watch brand that would be based in West Bengal, inspired by Kolkata and deeply connected with the history and cultural heritage of Bengal. Rather than simply creating another fashion watch brand or reproducing existing international design languages, the vision behind CWC was to build something more personal and more rooted in place. The ambition was to ask whether a watch could tell the story of a city, whether a colour could evoke a memory, whether a dial could be inspired by a cultural tradition and whether a timepiece could become a small, wearable connection to heritage.

That idea eventually became CWC — Calcutta Watch Company.

The name itself was chosen to carry a sense of history. “Calcutta” represents more than a geographical location. It carries the memory of an older city and the continuing identity of Kolkata—a city shaped by centuries of trade, architecture, culture, transportation, sport, art and human movement. Its historic streets, colonial and Indo-European architecture, the open landscape of the Maidan, the visual character of its public transport and the many traditions that have evolved across generations all contribute to a cultural identity unlike any other city in India. For CWC, the word Calcutta became a creative starting point rather than simply a name.

From that early concept, the process of building the brand began step by step. The initial journey involved selecting the right name, developing the CWC logo and visual identity, defining the brand philosophy, purchasing the domain, beginning website development and exploring how the company itself could gradually be established. At the same time, a much more specialised process was beginning behind the scenes. Watch movements had to be researched, potential product categories had to be understood, cases and dials had to be imagined, manufacturing possibilities had to be explored and the difference between simply creating a product and developing a genuine watch brand had to be carefully considered.

The process was therefore never only about selecting a watch and placing a logo on it. The interest gradually moved towards product development, watch design, movement selection, case design, dial concepts, manufacturing research and the broader world of watchmaking. Every stage raised new questions about materials, proportions, reliability, aesthetics and storytelling. The objective was to create products that could feel modern enough for a contemporary audience while carrying visual and cultural references that gave each collection a deeper reason to exist.

This became the foundation of the philosophy behind CWC.

- "Heritage on Wrist"

At the heart of Calcutta Watch Company is a simple but ambitious idea: heritage should not remain limited to museums, archives, old books or photographs. Heritage can also live in the objects people use and wear in everyday life. A watch is particularly suited to this idea because it is one of the most personal objects a person can own. It sits close to the wearer, travels through cities and countries, accompanies ordinary days and important milestones, and quietly records the passage of time.

For CWC, therefore, a watch should not be defined only by its movement, case diameter or technical specifications. Those things matter, and quality remains an important part of the product journey, but the story behind a watch matters too. Why does a collection exist? Why does a particular colour appear on the dial? Why does a texture look a certain way? Why is a design inspired by one city, one tradition or one moment in history? When those questions have meaningful answers, a watch can become more than an accessory. It can become a conversation between the past and the present.

This is the thinking behind the early heritage collections envisioned for CWC. The initial direction focuses on stories connected with Kolkata and West Bengal, beginning with the heritage of the city's iconic yellow taxis, Kolkata's long relationship with horses and equestrian culture, and the extraordinary artistic and cultural tradition of Purulia Chhau.

Although these collections are part of the brand's early-stage planning and creative roadmap, together they represent the larger direction of Calcutta Watch Company: to discover stories within Bengal's history and interpret them through contemporary watch design.

Vintage Kolkata Yellow Taxi Heritage Series

A Moving Symbol of the City

Few objects are as immediately connected with Kolkata's visual identity as the yellow taxi. For generations, the sight of these distinctive cars moving through the streets has been part of the everyday memory of the city. They have travelled past historic buildings, railway stations, markets and neighbourhoods, carrying office workers, families, visitors and countless individual stories. Kolkata's taxi history itself stretches back to the early twentieth century, and over time the city's yellow taxis became far more than a practical form of transport. They developed into one of the most recognisable symbols of Calcutta and later Kolkata.

The cultural connection is particularly interesting because the yellow taxi represents movement and memory at the same time. For one person, it may recall a journey through the city during the monsoon; for another, a ride home after a festival or a childhood trip with family. For many, the distinctive yellow colour remains connected with the visual language of old Kolkata. As the city's transportation system has continued to change and traditional yellow taxis have become less common, the emotional and nostalgic value attached to them has become even stronger.

The planned CWC Vintage Kolkata Yellow Taxi Heritage Series is inspired by this relationship between a city, its movement and its memory. The intention is not simply to place an illustration of a taxi onto a watch dial. The deeper creative challenge is to translate the feeling of vintage Kolkata into a timepiece. The warmth of yellow, the visual contrast traditionally associated with Kolkata taxis, the character of analogue travel and the sense of constant movement through an historic city can all become part of the collection's design language.

A colour can therefore become more than a colour. Yellow can become a reference to Kolkata. A contrasting detail can suggest the visual identity of a moving taxi. A dial texture may take inspiration from the roads, streets or mechanical character of an older urban landscape. The design philosophy behind the collection is to create a timepiece that carries the atmosphere of the city without becoming a literal souvenir.

In this sense, the Vintage Kolkata Yellow Taxi Heritage Series is envisioned as a tribute to one of the most familiar moving symbols of Kolkata. It is a collection about travel, memory, urban life and the passage of time—a natural connection for a watch inspired by a city that is always moving.

CWC Equestrian Heritage Series

Kolkata, the Maidan and a Long Tradition of Horses

Kolkata's relationship with horses is another remarkable chapter in the history of the city. Long before the modern skyline, contemporary transportation systems and rapidly changing urban landscape of present-day Kolkata, horses were deeply connected with the city's sporting, social and visual life. The history of organised horse racing around Calcutta stretches back to the eighteenth century, while racing later developed around the Maidan and became one of the most significant elements of India's equestrian tradition. Historical records connected with Kolkata's racing heritage trace organised racing to the late 1700s, while the Calcutta Turf Club was formally established in 1847 and the city's racecourse became an enduring part of Kolkata's identity.

The Maidan itself provides an important context for this story. More than simply a large green space, it has historically been connected with sport, public life and outdoor culture. The Kolkata Race Course and nearby polo grounds remain powerful reminders of the city's long relationship with equestrian activity. Official tourism information continues to identify the racecourse as one of India's major horse-racing venues, located within the historic landscape of central Kolkata.

The planned CWC Equestrian Heritage Series draws inspiration from this world of horses, racing, sporting elegance, movement and time. There is a natural connection between watchmaking and equestrian culture. A watch measures time with precision, while the horse represents movement, speed and rhythm. The powerful repetition of a gallop, the elegance of riding equipment, the sophistication traditionally associated with racing culture and the use of leather within the equestrian world all provide a rich visual language for design.

The collection is therefore not being imagined simply as a watch featuring a horse. Its inspiration goes deeper into the history and atmosphere of Kolkata's equestrian heritage. Design details may explore the rhythm of movement, classic sporting aesthetics, refined metallic finishes, leather-inspired elements and the elegant visual world associated with the Maidan and traditional racing culture. The objective is to create a collection that feels powerful without becoming aggressive, vintage without appearing outdated and luxurious without losing its connection to Kolkata.

Through the Equestrian Heritage Series, CWC aims to explore a chapter of Calcutta's history that combines sport, landscape, tradition and movement. It is a tribute to the horse as a symbol of speed and elegance, but also to the city that developed one of the most important equestrian cultures in India.

Purulia Chhau Heritage Series

When the Movement of Dance Meets the Movement of Time

The story of Bengal extends far beyond Kolkata. West Bengal is a region shaped by many distinct traditions, artistic forms and cultural histories, and one of the most visually powerful among them is Purulia Chhau. Chhau is an important dance tradition of eastern India with recognised regional forms associated with Purulia, Seraikella and Mayurbhanj. The Purulia tradition of West Bengal is especially known for its dramatic visual character, including the use of expressive masks, energetic movement and theatrical storytelling.

Chhau combines elements of regional culture, indigenous dance traditions and martial movement. Its performances can involve powerful physical expressions, stylised action, mythological storytelling, animal forms and dramatic characters. The tradition is also connected with community and festival life, particularly the springtime Chaitra Parva in the Purulia region. In 2010, Chhau dance was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, recognising its importance as a living cultural tradition.

For CWC, the connection between Purulia Chhau and watchmaking begins with movement. Dance moves through rhythm. A watch moves through seconds, minutes and hours. A performer creates expression through the movement of the body, while a mechanical or quartz timepiece creates its own continuous rhythm through the movement of its hands and mechanism. Both, in their own ways, are connected with time.

The planned Purulia Chhau Heritage Series is therefore envisioned as a respectful interpretation of this artistic tradition through contemporary design. The aim is not to reduce Chhau to a decorative pattern or use cultural symbols without meaning. Instead, the collection seeks to study the visual language of the tradition and explore how its dramatic geometry, expressive forms, powerful colours, rhythmic movement and storytelling can influence the design of a watch.

The layered construction of a dial may take inspiration from theatrical depth and movement. Sculptural details may draw from the visual strength of traditional masks. Colour combinations may reflect the energy and richness associated with performance, while patterns and textures may suggest rhythm, costume or movement. Even the caseback can become a space for telling the story behind the collection.

The deeper objective is to create a timepiece that connects the wearer with one of West Bengal's most significant living cultural traditions. Chhau is not a historical object that belongs only to the past. It continues through performance, communities and generations. That idea is particularly important to the philosophy of CWC. Heritage is meaningful not because it remains unchanged, but because it continues to move forward.

The Purulia Chhau Heritage Series is therefore envisioned around one central connection: dance moves, time moves and culture moves from one generation to another. A watch inspired by Chhau can become a small expression of that continuing movement.

Three Different Histories, One CWC Philosophy

The early heritage roadmap of Calcutta Watch Company brings together three very different worlds. The Vintage Kolkata Yellow Taxi Heritage Series explores the movement and memory of the city streets. The Equestrian Heritage Series looks towards Kolkata's long history of horses, racing, the Maidan and sporting culture. The Purulia Chhau Heritage Series reaches into one of West Bengal's most powerful traditions of movement, performance and cultural storytelling.

These collections may appear different at first, but they are connected by the same philosophy. Each begins with a story that already exists within Bengal. Each looks at heritage not as something static, but as a source of inspiration for contemporary design. Each asks how a local story can be transformed into an object that someone can wear anywhere in the world.

That is the larger creative direction behind CWC.

The brand is not interested in simply saying that a product is “inspired by Kolkata” and stopping there. The ambition is to understand why a particular part of Kolkata or Bengal matters, research its history, identify the emotional and visual elements connected with it and then explore how those elements can influence the design language of a collection.

A city can be represented through movement. A sporting tradition can be represented through rhythm and elegance. A folk art form can be represented through colour, geometry and storytelling. The final watch should carry that inspiration in a subtle and meaningful way.

Beyond the Wrist: The CWC Accessories Vision

The long-term world of CWC is also being envisioned beyond watches. As the brand develops, carefully designed accessories may become part of its wider identity, beginning with premium CWC caps and heritage-inspired headwear. The idea is not simply to create merchandise with a logo placed on the front. Just as a CWC watch is intended to have a story behind its design, the accessories are also being imagined as part of the lifestyle and visual world surrounding the brand.

The connection with caps and headwear is particularly natural when viewed through the heritage stories that inspire CWC. Kolkata's equestrian and sporting culture has long been associated with outdoor life, open grounds and traditional sporting style. The streets and transportation heritage of the city are connected with long journeys and daily movement under the strong Bengal sun. Across different periods of urban and sporting life, headwear has also formed part of the visual character of people spending long hours outdoors.

The CWC cap is therefore envisioned as a contemporary interpretation of this connection between heritage, movement, outdoor culture and personal style. A premium watch marks and accompanies time, while a well-designed cap accompanies the wearer through the journey. The two can exist within the same visual language.

Future CWC accessories may include exclusive logo caps, premium embroidered headwear, equestrian-inspired editions, heritage colourways and limited accessories connected directly with specific watch collections. The goal will be to maintain a sense of quality and exclusivity rather than treating accessories as an afterthought.

In this way, the brand's lifestyle direction can gradually expand while remaining connected to its original philosophy: every object should have an identity, and every identity should have a story.

A Bengal-Based Watch Brand with a Global Vision

CWC is being built with Kolkata and West Bengal at the centre of its creative identity, but the ambition of the brand is not limited to one city or one region. The story of a yellow taxi can connect with anyone who has memories of a changing city. The elegance of equestrian culture can be appreciated by watch and design enthusiasts across the world. The artistic power of Purulia Chhau can introduce people to a remarkable cultural tradition they may never have encountered before.

This is one of the possibilities that makes heritage storytelling so powerful. A local story can become globally meaningful when it is told with authenticity and translated through thoughtful design.

A watch, by its nature, travels. It can leave Kolkata and arrive in another city, another state or another country while still carrying a small piece of the story that inspired it. This is the broader ambition behind Calcutta Watch Company: to create a distinctive Kolkata watch brand and Bengal-based micro watch brand that can introduce the stories of the region to a wider community of collectors, enthusiasts and people who value meaningful design.

The words “Calcutta Watch Company” therefore represent both a location and an ambition. The roots are in Kolkata. The stories begin in Bengal. But the journey of the watches is intended to travel much further.

About - Kripanti Maity

Kripanti Maity is the Founder of CWC — Calcutta Watch Company, a heritage-inspired, Kolkata-based and Bengal-rooted watch brand currently being developed around the stories, culture and history of Kolkata and West Bengal. His interest in business, political analysis, branding, content creation and creative communication gradually led to the idea of building a brand that could combine entrepreneurship with cultural storytelling.

The concept for CWC began taking shape in August 2026, starting with a vision for an exclusive Indian micro watch brand inspired by the heritage of Kolkata and Bengal. From that initial idea, the journey gradually moved into brand naming, logo design, visual identity, website development, domain establishment, company planning, product research, movement selection, watch design and manufacturing exploration.

The early collections planned for CWC reflect this vision, with concepts inspired by the Vintage Kolkata Yellow Taxi, Kolkata's equestrian heritage and Purulia Chhau. Each collection is intended to begin with historical and cultural research before being interpreted through a contemporary product and design language.

For Kripanti Maity, CWC is not simply about creating another watch company. It is about exploring the relationship between time and memory, design and identity, heritage and the future. The aim is to build a brand where every collection begins with a question: what story deserves to be remembered, and how can that story be carried forward through time?

The Beginning of a Longer Journey

Calcutta Watch Company is still at the beginning of its journey. The early concepts, collections and product ideas represent the foundation of a much larger vision that will continue to evolve as the brand grows. Future CWC collections may explore other chapters of Kolkata and West Bengal, including architecture, festivals, transportation, maritime history, ports, craftsmanship, sporting traditions, historic landmarks and cultural movements.

The philosophy, however, will remain connected to the original thought that inspired the brand. A watch should not only tell the time. It can also tell a story.

For CWC, that story begins with Kolkata—the city once known as Calcutta, shaped by history and constantly transformed by time. It continues through the cultural landscape of West Bengal and the many stories that remain waiting to be interpreted.

What began as an idea in August 2026 has gradually become a journey of research, design, product development and brand building.

The destination is still ahead.

But the first chapter has already begun.
